Around the year 1000, European music underwent a fundamental transformation as monophonic chant blossomed into polyphony - a new and breathtaking way of experiencing sound and space. Ordo Virtutum invites us to follow the earliest flowering of polyphony from the monasteries of Reichenau and Chartres to the magnificent cathedrals of Santiago de Compostela and Notre-Dame in Paris, and onward to the atmospheric richness of the 16th century. With artistic presence and deep expertise, the ensemble brings to life-and makes accessible-the stillness, intensity, and unexpected beauty of medieval song, even for the first-time listener.
