International Conference:
“Nordic Early Music in a Global Context”
Stockholm 3-5 June 2024
Around 100 participants from nearly 20 countries visited some of Stockholm’s most beautiful places during three intense conference days. Participants included representatives from the performing arts, programming, education, artist management and research. The conference focused on the Nordic music tradition and was organised in connection with the Stockholm Early Music Festival. Peter Pontvik, Artistic Director of Early Music Sweden, took the initiative to host the conference. On the last evening of the conference, the Royal Couple attended to open the festival.

About the conference:
EARLY MUSIC SWEDEN, together with NORDEM, hosted the REMA 2024 conference “Nordic Early Music in a Global Context”. The event took place at EMS partner venues in the Stockholm area, linked to music and cultural history.
The programme included collaborations with Drottningholm Palace Theatre, Royal Academy of Music, Swedish Academy, Tessinska Palatset/Länsstyrelsen i Stockholms län and Musikaliska.
The aim of the conference was to highlight the nature and significance of Nordic early music, both historically and from a contemporary perspective, and to anchor it in a broader European context.
Through the conference, EARLY MUSIC SWEDEN was able to contribute to deepening and broadening knowledge of the Nordic musical heritage at an international level, strengthening interaction between organisations and individuals, and increasing the exposure of Swedish and Nordic early music at a global level.
The conference represented an important milestone in that it created the conditions for closer co-operation and understanding between the Nordic and European early music communities. The programme included lectures, panels and discussions on creation and heritage, as well as performances and concerts by Swedish and Nordic artists.
